حوران Houran Syria Traditional Dress and Costume

$0.00

The Houran, Horon, or Hauran ( three spellings) dress and Syrian heritage costume has the most expressive clean design using horn or antler symbolic motifs in a herringbone ladder stitch. Some dresses include crisscrossed horn on the cuffs, and the center back area of the neck.

The neckline is festooned with an intricate center back stand up collar adorned in vertical abstract lines which resemble Armenian panels of embroidery. . Sometimes this fashion detail is embroidered with multiple color threads but for the most part is has a contemporary edge as the dress in generally always made in heavy black Syrian cotton and uses only one bright color embroidery thread.

Known for the dramatic neckline plunge and detailed seam embroidery, this type of dress I found to be the easy and most comfortable design for wear

A snug blouse or slip in cotton are generally worn beneath the dress which showcases the bust line and the silver or gold jewelry and coins. Fine goat hair with wool belts woven on a tiny loom are known in Houran but even though I have three two meter long belts in my collection I have yet to see the older women of today wear them.

The Arjeh عرجه head chain ornament, handmade in Damascus with the three identical signed henges festooned with Empress Maria Theresa silver stamped coin (Austrian Mint) and Ottoman Liras down the back is also my collection
